SCHOOL BOY,13,KILLED AS CAR HITS  BICYCLE
Roy Eugene Ellis Hit By Fairfield's
Man's Car:
Dies Before  Reaching  Hospital.
                     
Roy Eugene Ellis , 13, son of
Mr and Mrs Albert Ellis, of route 7, was struck 
by  a car driven by Harry Taylor of Fairfield. 
Roy, along with three of his classmates at 
Summersville school, was riding to  school on his
bicycle shortly before eight o'clock this morning 
when the  accident occurred.
                  
The boys came from a side road and pedaled their their 
bicycles on to State  Highway 15, the Fairfield
road, a short distance east of Mt Vernon.  Taylors'   
car approaching from the east struck Roy  Ellis.
An ambulance rushed the boy to the hospital but he was 
pronounced dead by the  examining physician.
               
Roy Eugene Ellis was born Aug. 18, 1927, the son of 
ALBERT ELLIS and MABEL FULFORD ELLIS. He had lived his
entire life in Mt. Vernon township.
              
Funeral services will be held at Myers  chapel Thursday 
at 2.pm  and will be conducted by  Rev. Thomas Harper.
Burial will  follow in Oakwood cemetery.
                       
Roy is survived by two brothers Ray and Bill Ellis, 
both at home, and four  grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Lawrence Ellis of Mt Vernon and Mr and Mrs W.P.Fulford 
of Mt  Vernon.

Robert M. Farthing and Otto Patterson left last night 
to be present at the closing of the World's Fair.

Mr. and Mrs. John R. Allen and Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Emmerson, 
who have been in northern Wisconsin hunting for two or three 
weeks returned home this morning.

A separate maintenance suit, Lustig vs. Lustig, is on trial 
in the court.

Mr. and Mrs. James M. Dickson are moving into their new home, 
formerly the J. W. Baugh property on north Tenth street, which 
they purchased recently.

Hit by the crash in prices of things they handle, the Mt. Vernon 
Produce Company, operating plants in this city, Nashville and 
Pinkneyville is preparing to go out of business.

News has been received of the death at St. Paul, Minn. of Rev. 
Lewis, a former pastor of the Presbyterian church of this city.

The greatest surprise of the season, perhaps was the heavy snowfall 
of the early morning today.

Mrs. Susan Norman of Marion who last summer celebrated her 102nd 
birthday is dead.

Oct. 29,1940

Mrs. James H. Osborn died this afternoon at the family home in 
this city. Mrs. Osborn fell and broke one hip last Saturday while 
on a visit to her daughter in St. Louis and was brought to Mt. Vernon 
Sunday.

Kurtis L. Norman aged 81 years, died at the home of his daughter, 
Mrs. Walter Turnage this morning.

More than 2000 Methodist laymen and ministers from all parts of 
Egypt attended the homecoming of the orphanage maintained here 
by the Southern Illinois conference of the church today.

Dr. and Mrs. O. A. Suttle returned yesterday from a visit of 
several days in Louisville, Ky.

Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Trouivetter left Monday for Lakesworth, Florida.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Von Arm and daughter Deanna, have returned 
to their home in Evansville, Ind., after a visit with Mr. and 
Mrs. F. L. Franck and other relatives.

The condition of Harry Shaw of 507 east Casey, who has been ill 
for the past four weeks is improved. He has been a patient in 
Herrin hospital suffering with a serious foot injury he sustained 
in the Nason mine.

H. F. Maxey and L. Green are visitingat the home of the former's 
mother, Mrs. Allen Maxey.

Ed Reeves of St. Louis visited at this city yesterday.

Glen O. Dickey of Sims spent yesterday in this city.

Mr. and Mrs. John Watkins of Woodlawn visited in Mt. Vernon Monday.

Ida Frances Louis and Jean Beniard have returned to their home in 
Benton, after a visit in Mt. Vernon.

Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Hutchcraft of Bluford visited in this city Monday.

Frank Starkey is confined to his home on Welkins street by illness.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Tobin of RFD 6 are the parents of a son born last 
night. He weighed 10 pounds and has not been named.

Mrs. Anna Marcus of Nason spent Monday afternoon in this city.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Howe of Woodlawn visited in Mt. Vernon yesterday.

Mr. and Mrs.Edward Christopher of Washington, Pa., have returned to 
their home after spending the past few days with the latter's parents, 
Mr. and Mrs. S. D. Faulkner.

Mareta Fox and Doris Edmondson who are students at the Midland school 
of Commerce in St. Louis, spent the week end with their parents and 
other relatives here.

Mrs. Anna Marcus of Nason spent Monday afternoon in this city. 

Arden Pierce of Bonnie, visited in Mt. Vernon yesterday.

George Rector of Keenes, was a business visitor in this city Monday.

Bobby Ross, son of Mrs. Howard Ross, underwent an operation for the 
removal of his tonsils in the office of a local physician Saturday 
morning.

Helen Zaharkis of east St. Louis is visiting here.

Mr. and Mrs. Arlin Boles of 909 south 7th street are the parents of 
a son born this morning. He has been names Gary Howard.

Ashley road by illness.

Emmerson Burke of McLeansboro was a visitor in this city Monday.

The condition of Mrs. Charles DeWitt, who is a patient at St. 
Luke's Hospital in St. Louis is improved.

Mr. and Mrs. William Miner and Mrs. Laura Daniel returned today 
from a visit with Mr. Miner's brother and family in Washington D.C.

Mrs. Dale Carpenter was able to be brought to her home in this city 
from St. Ann's hospital in St. Louis where she has been a patient 
for the past few weeks, Mrs. Carpenter's condition is much improved.

Mr. and Mrs. J. D. McGill and son Bill of McAllen, Texas, have arrived 
here to be at the bedside of Mrs. Vern Egbert who has been quite ill 
for the past week. Her condition is improved today.
