45 Years Ago Today Oct.15 1943 Charlie Hobbs who has been visiting with his mother and other relatives for the last two weeks, left for his home in Chicago today. George Wright and Miss Inez Leuty were married at the home of the brides mother on east Main street at nine o'clock yesterday morning.
30 Years Ago Today Oct.15 1943 By virtue of appointment by President Wilson, J.J.Baker, formly secretary treasurer of the Mt.Vernon news today assumed the duties of postmaster of Mt.Vernon. Mr.and Mrs.Walter Collins of South 9th st. are the proud parents of a fine boy.
25 Years Ago Today Oct.15 1943 After 11 years of faithful service in the express business,Harley Rupar today resigned as agent for the combined express business in Mt Vernon. Mrs Ula Mansell, daughter of Mr and Mrs G.W.Rose of 620 Perkins died at her home in Centralia today of influenza.
20 Years Ago Today Oct.15 1943 Mrs. Nancy Hicks,today celebrated her 98th birthday in Woodlawn at her home. Mrs Bell Allen was hostess when the Round Table Club met Monday at the home of Mrs Albert Watson.
15 Years Ago Today Oct.15 1943 Mrs.Orin Metcalf, librarian, and Miss Ruth Metcalf assistant, departed this morning for Danville where they will attend the state meeting of the librarians of Illinois. Rev.C.L.Peterson is a visitor in Carmi today.
10 Years Ago Today Oct.15 1943 Miss Elizabeth Badget entertained a number of little boys and girls at her home,1001 South 12th street today in complimentary of her sister, Dorothy, who celebrated her ninth birthday. Among those who visited the Mt Vernon-Fairfield football gameon Saturday were, Betty Poole, Ferne Boswell and Marjorie Hubbard. Lilly Hall and Hazel Purcell were visitors in east St.Louis yesterday where they attended a district meeting of WPA Housekeepers and Superintendents.

TIDBITS 259 Babies born in Mt.Vernon Since First of Year Birth of an unusually large number of babies since the first of the year has added to the population of Mt.Vernon, Dodds,and Shiloh township. During the nine and half month period,259 births have occurred in the city of Mt Vernon and 99 have been born in the rural areas according to the vitals stats at the city clerks office. Birthdays in the three townships area total 358. During the same period only 176 deaths have occurred, 133 of them in city. Sleeping Rooms Needed Here Due to a large number of visitors attending the National Field Futurity Meet the week of October 31st to November 6th, sleeping rooms in private homes are needed. Persons having sleeping rooms to rent for the week are requested to call the Mt. Vernon Chamber of Commerce, telephone number 102. Damage Caused by Halloween Pranks Here Mt Vernon police today warned the city's youngsters against premature Halloween pranks. An outbreak of such pranks during the last few days has resulted in numerous complaints to the police dept. and in many cases they were reports of property damage. For example,this week,the windows of a store building on south 10th was broken by a thrown rock and last night a rock shattered a window of a home on south 18th street. Officers said that many complaints were of boys throwing empty tin cans at cars and houses.
